10 Things You Need To Know Before Eating At Hard Rock Café

There's lots to learn before you pig out and rock out at this iconic chain.

1. It all started with a burger craving.

While living in London in 1971, friends Issac Tigrett and Peter Morton set out in search of a good American burger &mdash something that was hard to come by across the pond at the time. After coming up short, they decided to open their own American-style diner in an old Rolls Royce dealership on Old Park Lane. The original location is still standing.

2. The logo was inspired by. car parts?

Celebrity artist Alan Aldridge (he worked with the Beatles!) modeled the logo after a Chevrolet's car hood ornament. The colors were originally going to be red, white and blue, but they ended up scrapping that in the end.

3. Paul McCartney performed the café's first-ever concert.

As a warm-up for their UK tour, Paul McCartney & Wings played an impromptu show at the London café in 1973. Today, locations around the world host over 15,000 live music events every year.

4. The famous T-shirts were created by accident.

The original café in London sponsored a local football (soccer) team, whose shirts featured the logo. Frequent customers got to keep the extras, and before the owners knew it, people started showing up asking for them. Eventually, the owners had to build a shack outside the café to house the retail operation. Today it makes up almost 40% of business.

5. Big stars became regulars at the original restaurant.

Eric Clapton started frequenting the London café and eventually asked owner Issac Tigrett to hang his guitar over his favorite bar stool to "mark his spot." Pete Townshend of The Who mailed his guitar to the café a week later to secure his own place, kicking off the restaurant's now-legendary collection of instruments.

6. The café's first waitress still works for the chain.

Rita Gilligan was the original restaurant's first hire back in 1971, and to this day she travels the world as a spokesperson for Hard Rock.

7. They've got some insane burgers.

Every year the chain hosts a World Burger Tour, which introduces new, limited-edition burgers to the menu, inspired by ingredients from around the world. This year, the Local Legendary Burgers are inspired by cities like Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam and Buenos Aires in Argentina.

8. There's a song written about it.

Carole King, a self-proclaimed Hard Rock burger-lover, penned a song called "Hard Rock Café," which became a hit in 1977. The lyrics tell it like it is &mdash "After a hard day's work I guarantee / There just isn't anywhere better to be &hellip"

9. The cafés double as epic music museums.

Since Clapton and Townshend first donated their guitars, Hard Rock's memorabilia collection has grown exponentially. There are over 80,000 pieces in the current collection, including amazing pieces like Michael Jackson's red "Beat It" jacket, John Lennon's glasses, Madonna's "Like A Virgin" wedding dress, Jimi Hendrix's Flying V guitar and Elvis Presley's 24-karat gold leaf grand piano, which he played at his Graceland home.

10. You can find them all over the world.

The first U.S. café opened in Los Angeles back in 1982, but today there are more than 200 restaurant locations spread across 68 countries. The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino business kicked off in Las Vegas in 1995, and now travelers can stay at 23 hotels and bet their luck at 11 casinos around the world.

Hard Rock Cafe

Smashing a guitar and hanging it on the wall will not give you the true Hard Rock Cafe experience unless you then eat a sandwich with this cole slaw served on the side. You have to be patient though since it's not something you can enjoy right away. Good cole slaw needs a little time to chill in the cool box—24 hours at least. The cabbage needs a chance to get it together with the other ingredients before rocking out at the gig inside your mouth.

Menu Description: "Select pork, hickory-smoked then hand-pulled, so it's tender and juicy. 'An old Southern delicacy' with our famous vinegar-based bar-b-que sauce. Served with fries, ranch beans and homemade coleslaw."

Take a big honkin' bite out of one of these and you'll soon know why it's the Hard Rock Cafe's most popular sandwich. The pork is hickory smoked for 10 hours, but since we're impatient hungry people here, we'll cut that cooking time down to under 4 hours using a covered grill and carefully arranged charcoal. Just sprinkle wet hickory chips over the hot charcoal arranged around the inside edge of a grill (such as a round Weber), and let the smoking begin. You can certainly use an actual smoker if you've got one, and go the full 10 hours. You should try to make your cabbage a day ahead of time so it has time to marinate.

If you like baked beans you'll want to try this clone recipe from the world's first theme restaurant chain. Combine ingredients in a covered casserole dish, and bake for an hour and a half. This makes the dish handy if transporting to another location for a party or potluck, since you can fill the dish, cover it, then pop it into the oven once you arrive. When the first Hard Rock Cafe opened in 1971 on Old Park Lane in London, England, not one guitar or gold record decorated the walls. The burger joint was the inspiration of two Americans, Peter Morton and Isaac Tigrett, who couldn't find a decent American style hamburger anywhere in London and decided to do something about it. The restaurant soon became famous only for its food, until along came Eric Clapton, who donated his guitar as a joke. Up on the wall it went. Not wanting to be outdone, Pete Townsend of The Who soon offered up a guitar of his own to be hung on the wall next to Clapton's with a note: "Mine's as good as his." That started a wave of donations from rock and rollers through the decades, and thus was born the world's first theme restaurant. Soon more Hard Rock Cafes were opening around the world, with the first one in America opening in Los Angeles in 1982. After that came New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, New Orleans, Maui, Las Vegas, Aspen, Newport Beach, and many more. The success of the Hard Rock Cafe spawned a trend which now includes other restaurants built around themes ranging from movies to fashion to motorcycles to blues.

The collection of rock and roll memorabilia is different in each Hard Rock Cafe. You may find artifacts that come from recording stars of the fifties, like Elvis Presley and Fats Domino, to more contemporary artists such as Prince, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana. I thought these ribs with a barbecue sauce made from watermelon rind had a unique and memorable flavor begging to be duplicated for your next power meal. The sauce is sweet and slightly tangy, and the ribs are so tender they melt in your mouth. It's the slow-cooking process that makes them that way. Throwing them on the grill at the last minute is not meant to cook them so much as it is to add the smoky flavor and slight charring that good ribs require. If possible, make the watermelon barbecue sauce a day ahead so the ribs can marinate in it overnight. If you don't have time for that, at least marinate the ribs for a couple of hours.

Hard Rock Cafe Twisted Mac 'N Cheese

The best copycat mac 'n cheese available - made unique by the addition of monterey jack cheese. Red bell peppers and parsley add crunch and color.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups cavatappi pasta
  • 1 / 3 cup whole milk
  • 4 ounces velveeta
  • 1 / 2 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 / 2 cup monterey jack cheese, shredded
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper, ground
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 / 4 cup red bell pepper, diced and roasted
  • 2 teaspoons seasoned breadcrumbs
  • 2 teaspoons Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 / 4 teaspoon parsley, minced

Instructions

  1. Use a large saucepan to cook pasta following the directions on the package, then drain
  2. Combine milk, velveeta, cheddar cheese, jack cheese, cayenne pepper, and black pepper in the same saucepan, and heat over low heat for about 10 minutes until cheese is melted and sauce is smooth. Add pasta and roasted pepper to the pan, and then toss to coat pasta.
  3. Combine the breadcrumbs, parmesan and parsley in small bowl.
  4. Pour pasta into a serving bowl and then sprinkle parmesan breadcrumbs over the top.

I love to eat comfort food, especially macaroni and cheese. Homemade macaroni and cheese is the best so I am always interested in recipes for the dish. When making this recipe, I would use skim milk, reduced fat cheddar cheese, and plain black pepper, instead of cayenne pepper.

I do not use velveeta. So, mine probably didn't turn out the same, but was tasty. Since the velveeta seems to be more as a way for the other cheeses to melt nicely, I used cream cheese instead and added some salt. I love peppers in my mac and cheese so I knew I would love this. I was right.

Never dined at a Hard Rock Cafe, though I've visited the casino hotels in Vegas and Tampa. This looks like a really splendid macaroni and cheese recipe. I love mac and cheese that has a bit of a kick, and the cayenne really gives it an extra dimension. Cavatappi pasta is a great choice for this dish, since there's more surface for the cheese to cling to. And I love the multiple cheeses used in this. The only addition I might make is some crumbled bacon on top along with the Parmesan breadcrumbs.

8) Restrictions. We expressly reserve the right to remove or not make available any Materials that we deem to be in violation of this Agreement, applicable laws or our community standards in our sole discretion. You agree that you will not upload, post, e-mail or otherwise transmit Materials to us or our Affiliates that contain software viruses or any other computer code, files, or programs designed to interrupt, destroy or limit the functionality of any computer software or hardware or telecommunications equipment.

9) No Obligation. Although we have the right to include your Materials in the Service or in any Media, we do not have the obligation to do so. We may, in our sole discretion and for any reason, refuse the Materials or remove them from our Service at any time.

10) Changes to Agreement. We reserve the right to change any of the terms of this Agreement or any Specifications or Guidelines governing the Service at any time in our sole discretion. All changes will be effective upon posting to the Service. However, for all changes to this Agreement, excluding Specifications and Guidelines, we will post a notice of change for thirty (30) days. 14) Disclaimer. PRIME PUBLISHING PROVIDES THE SERVICE "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND.

15) Miscellaneous. This Agreement will be governed by the laws of the United States of America and the state of Washington, without reference to rules governing choice of laws. Any action relating to this Agreement must be brought in the federal or state courts located in Seattle, Washington, and you irrevocably consent to the jurisdiction of such courts. You may not assign this Agreement, by operation of law or otherwise, without our prior written consent. Subject to that restriction, this Agreement will be binding on, inure to, and be enforceable against the parties and their respective successors and permitted assigns. Our failure to enforce your strict performance of any provision of this Agreement will not constitute a waiver of our right to enforce such provision or any other provision of this Agreement subsequently. The Specifications and Guidelines (including all future changes) are incorporated by reference into this Agreement. Sharing Your Own Images

You! Anyone who is a registered and logged in user.

Please share images that will help other visitors. For example:

  • Images that highlight a article's features ("Here are the controls on this music player", "See the clasp for this necklace", "Look at the box this came in")
  • Images showing someone using a product ("Here I am wearing this scarf", "Install the ink cartridge here")
  • Images related to a topic ("My dog Skipper", "A great outfit", "Our family at Yellowstone", "How to glue a chair using a cabinet clamp")
  • Images that show how a product performs ("I took this picture with this camera", "This shirt shrunk in the wash", "The saw blade after 100 cuts")
  • Images that give a sense of the size of the product ("This refrigerator is actually 6' tall", "A cellphone the size of a credit card")

Do include captions for your images. While not required, they provide context for your images. Additionally, you can use the Image Notes feature to highlight one or more interesting areas in your image. Everyone will see your notes when they roll over your image.

What shouldn't I share?

Behave as if you were a guest at a friend's dinner party: please treat the Prime Publishing community with respect. Do not share:

  • Profane, obscene, or spiteful images, or any images with nudity
  • Images to which you do not own the intellectual property rights
  • Images featuring phone numbers, mail addresses, or URLs. You can watermark an image with copyright information.
  • Images featuring availability, price, or alternative ordering/shipping information
  • Images featuring external Web sites, contests, or other solicitations
  • Any personal information about children under 13
  • Images with automobile license plates that are prominent and easily read (pictures with license plates that have been fuzzed out or that otherwise cannot be read are acceptable).

The same guidelines apply to your captions and notes.

What image formats and sizes are supported?

We support JPEG, GIF and PNG images. Files must be no more than 1MB. Both the image height and the image width must be between 60 and 3500 pixels.

Instead of uploading an image, can I just enter a link to an image?

No, all images must be uploaded to Prime Publishing. This ensures your image is always available.

How long does it take to upload an image?

The time varies depending on the speed of your Internet connection and the size of the image file. For a 400KB image, for example, you should expect 2 to 4 minutes over a 56KB modem and under 1 minute for DSL or cable modem.

Where will my image appear?

Generally your image will appear where you uploaded it: in the article image gallery.

Who owns the images I upload?

The rights owner of the image continues to own the image uploading your image to Prime Publishing does not transfer ownership.


Steak and Ale

This Texas steakhouse first opened in the 1960s, and it remained an independent chain throughout the Dallas area. Steak and Ale was a local hit, offering New York strip and herb-roasted prime rib for prices as low as the watts of the bulbs in its dimly-lit restaurants.

After Pillsbury bought Steak and Ale in the '80s, the chain went national with 280 locations. And if you visited a Steak and Ale in the mid-'90s, you probably remember it for its special early evening menu, with even lower prices and a free drink and dessert. But competition grew fierce in the casual-dining chain arena. By 2008, we all said goodbye to "The Best Steakhouse in Town" as Steak and Ales nationwide closed down.

"The salad bar was the best thing ever," one faithful Michigan Steak and Ale customer said to America Jr. in 2008. "The bread was honey wheat roll bread with sesame seeds on it with butter that tasted like ice cream. It was delicious. … Now I have to find another restaurant. What am I gonna do?"
